With the largest stone weighing 1.4 carats, this follows news of a 35.26-carat brown rough diamond being discovered at the site in January this year and a 0.124-carat blue diamond being found in December 2016.
A company statement described the latest green diamonds discovery as “highly encouraging”, noting that the finds demonstrated the “mine’s potential for producing valuable coloured diamonds”.
Australia’s largest diamond – a 104.73-carat stone – was also discovered at the Merlin diamond mine in 2003. It is believed to be valued at more than $1 million.
As previously reported by Jeweller, operations recommenced at the diamond mine in late 2016. The site closed in 2003 after a five-year operating period. During this time, the mine was said to have been renowned for the production of “top quality white diamond and large specials”.
The Merlin diamond mine, which comprises 14 kimberlite pipes, reportedly has a remaining resource of 4.3 million carats and an 11-year life span.
It is located approximately 100 km south of Borroloola.
