$100K jewellery stolen in carpark attack

A Sydney-based supplier was followed and then robbed of jewellery valued at about $100,000 in a shopping centre carpark.

The incident took place at around 3:30pm on Tuesday 10 March at Westfield Hurstville in south Sydney.

It is understood the 55-year-old victim was returning to his car after a sales visit to a jewellery retailer located inside the shopping complex. The supplier was carrying a suitcase of items at the time that included rings, pendants, bracelets and necklaces imported from Italy.

He told police he noticed a woman following him from the shopping centre and also noticed a Mitsubishi Magna double-parked nearby.

According to a local police report, he then heard yelling and turned to see two men running towards him. One of the suspects hit the supplier on the arm, causing him to drop the suitcase, while the other man seized the bag; both thieves escaped in the Magna.

Police are currently investigating the incident and wish to speak with two men of Asian appearance, aged between 25 and 30 years old and about 170 cm tall, and a woman described as having olive skin and dark brown hair. Two children were also reportedly seated in the back of the getaway car during the attack.

It is unknown whether the robbery was planned and anyone with information has been asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report via nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.

The incident follows other reports of jewellery thefts taking place in Sydney carparks. As previously reported by Jeweller, two jewellery salesmen were robbed of gold jewellery in 2012 after thieves broke into their vehicle located in a carpark in Campbelltown.

The following year, another two suppliers were robbed of jewellery and cash after visiting a jewellery store located inside a shopping complex in Rhodes.
