Pantone 2016 autumn jewellery trend shakeup

If Pantone’s latest colour trend forecast is any indication, then jewellery designs for the upcoming season may involve a move away from ‘typical’ autumn hues.

Colour authority Pantone, alongside a group of fashion designers from New York Fashion Week, has chosen a new set of colours expected to inspire trends in the jewellery, fashion and other creative industries.

The colour palette for autumn 2016 is said to represent aspirations of “unity of strength, confidence and complexity”.

Pantone’s team has again decided to transcend gender norms – just like in previous trend forecasts – and selected a combination of bright, lively hues that mark a departure from ‘standard’ autumn colours.

Commenting on how the autumn 2016 report reflected the three desires of strength, confidence and complexity, Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman said: “Blue skies represent constancy as they are always above us. Greys give a feeling of stability, red tones invite confidence and warmth, while the hot pinkish purples and spicy mustard yellows suggest a touch of the exotic.”

In a nod to the prominence of blue shades featured in the autumn palette, a new blue colour, Riverside, leads the report. Keep reading to learn more about the Riverside hue as well as an overview of the other on-trend colours for the season.

The top 10 colours for autumn 2016

RIVERSIDE PANTONE 17-4028	The new *Riverside* is the cool, calming and stable force in the palette. It gives a sense of vibrancy and excitement, while maintaining consistency.
AIRY BLUE PANTONE 14-4122	Maintaining the precedence of blue tones, the new *Airy Blue* represents a want for freedom in a world full of conflict.
SHARKSKIN PANTONE 17-3914	*Sharkskin* is an edgy hue that can be paired with almost any other autumn colour in this trend forecast. It’s also a practical shade given the neutral tone.
AURORA RED PANTONE 18-1550	*Aurora Red* provides the report a bit of a spark. The bold colour is pleasing to the eye and has an air of excitement.
WARM TAUPE PANTONE 16-1318	The trend guide heads back to the neutral tones with Warm Taupe. An ageless colour, Warm Taupe is indicative of stability.
DUSTY CEDAR PANTONE 18-1630	*Dusty Cedar* is a pink hue that would typically feature in a spring collection. The rose-toned shade radiates warmth.
LUSH MEADOW PANTONE 18-5845	Flora and fauna spring to mind when viewing the new *Lush Meadow*. It continues the theme of elegant tones chosen throughout this palette.
SPICY MUSTARD PANTONE 14-0952	As an exotic addition to the collection, the fresh *Spicy Mustard* is louder than previous season mustards. The colour is accentuated when used in geometric designs.
POTTER'S CLAY PANTONE 18-1340	The inclusion of *Potter’s Clay* in the report is as a foundation shade. The natural earthy hue is a classic in the autumn and winter colour reports.
BODACIOUS PANTONE 17-3240	Finally, *Bodacious* is an unexpected colour to appear in the forecast. This is a bright, rich hue that can be paired with other vibrant colour combinations.
