Centenary celebrations are currently underway for Adelaide jeweller Archer & Holland

Family jeweller celebrates 100 years

One of Adelaide’s oldest family owned jewellers is celebrating 100 years in business, providing a positive example of longevity in the jewellery industry.

Archer & Holland, which is owned by Meredith and Bill Whiting, celebrated the milestone event by having their store name presented on one of Adelaide’s city trams. It will be displayed for the next three months as part of the celebrations.

“As a family business, we are so pleased to celebrate this milestone year with our team and loyal customers.”

“The tram is a sentimental piece of history for all of us at Archer & Holland. We are the first private business to advertise on an Adelaide tram,” the Whitings said in a media statement. “As a family business, we are so pleased to celebrate this milestone year with our team and loyal customers. We couldn’t think of a better way to showcase our history and in such a significant place.”

Founded by Herbert Archer and Herbert Holland in 1918, the jewellery store had a presence in numerous locations throughout Adelaide’s CBD, before eventually moving to its current location at the City Cross Arcade in Rundle Mall.

After Holland died in 1957, the business was taken over by his daughters. His grandson Bill and wife Meredith went on to buy Archer & Holland in 1992.

“Retail in Adelaide has had a tough time in terms of longevity. We feel proud and lucky that we’ve been able to succeed, not only as a family business but also having managed to build up our loyal client base,” Bill said. “This year, we are proud to work with our family serving our wonderful and loyal customers – and hope to do so for many years to come.”

The family business specialises in unique, custom designs, including engagement and wedding rings. According to the Whitings, this is what sets their business apart from others.

“Bill, who has created stunning pieces of jewellery for over 40 years, manufactures and repairs all pieces in store,” Meredith added.

Asked if any jewellery pieces stood out during their 25 years owning the business, the Whitings both noted an “amazing” ring: “One of our interstate clients had a custom made here in Adelaide – a 3.05-carat white diamond, in an amazing design which took over 40 hours to design and craft. The ring was valued at $150,000.”

The Archer & Holland tram will travel along Adelaide’s Hindmarsh– Glenelg line until June 2018.
