Stolen ring gets swallowed up at auction

Brisbane’s infamous diamond ring that was allegedly stolen and swallowed by a man during a jewellery store robbery now has a new owner after being sold in an online auction.
The winning bidder, said to be a mother of four from Perth, purchased the ring at the Graysonline auction for $16,000 - $11,000 less than its original retail price.

The item was one of two diamond rings swallowed by David Watts after he allegedly stole them in November 2013 from the Crown Family Jewellers store located at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre.

Watts was held in custody until he was able to pass the evidence. Police were later forced to admit the second ring, valued at $35,000, was accidentally thrown out in a medical waste bag.

The ring’s history did not seem to deter hopeful bidders however, with last minute bids reportedly adding $2,000 to the piece’s selling price.

The money raised from the auction (held on 23 December) was donated to the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland.
