London-based miner, Gem Diamonds, has announced the discovery of two
“exceptional” 160-carat diamonds from its Letšeng mine in Lesotho.
The two rough stones, a 162.06-carat Type II diamond and a 161.74-carat Type I diamond, are said to be in “largely undamaged condition” and are expected to achieve top prices at the company’s February tender.
Gem Diamonds CEO Clifford Elphick said the condition of the two finds provided proof that the measures undertaken by the company to reduce diamond damage was “bearing fruit”.
“We are pleased to see the Letšeng mine continue to deliver such large high quality white diamonds as the mine confirms its position as the world’s foremost source of exceptional large diamonds,” he said.
The finds enhance Letšeng’s reputation for impressive stones. In September 2013, a 12-carat rough blue was found at the mine, along with the famous August 2011 discovery of the 550-carat Letšeng Star.
Since its acquisition of Letšeng in 2006, Gem Diamonds claims the mine has produced four of the top twenty largest white quality diamonds recorded.
