New York showcases jewellery trends

Jewellery trends will be big and bold in 2010, according to designers at the recent New York Fashion Week.
A highpoint of the international industry calendar, the event is reputed as an important forecaster of emerging trends around the globe.
Jewellery and accessories have taken on more importance at recent fashion shows as designers react to consumer demand.
"Each season, accessories seem to become more and more important because it's less expensive to buy accessories than to buy new clothes," Ruth Finley, publisher of The Fashion Calendar, told Reuters.
Marshal Cohen from market research firm the NPD Group agreed: “The key is that accessories have become the new primary outfit and the outfit has become the accessory,” he said.
If upcoming jewellery designer Dannijo’s well-received line is anything to go by, this season will be all about chunky, layered pieces.
Dannijo’s range included stacks of bangles in bright blue and black stingray leather, darked gold and silver, and "messy" chain necklaces.
Meanwhile, jewellery brand Prova showcased hand-crafted necklaces with multiple strands of beads, as well as long gold and silver earrings with mobiles of stars.
Designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka, whose jewellery and gown designs are red carpet staples, had something edgier in mind for this season, saying their collection drew inspiration from the Mad Max action movies.
Finally, designer Philippe Tournaire deserves a mention for getting into the spirit of the event with his New York Skyline ring (pictured).
