DAVID MCINTOSH

Works at: McIntosh Jewellers

Age: 57

Years in trade: 40 years

Training: Traditional four year apprenticeship

First job: Prouds Jewellers Adelaide in 1976

Favourite gemstone:

Sapphire because of the diversity of colours – in particular, top royal blue sapphire.

Favourite metal:

18-carat white gold because of its ability to maintain integrity and the original colour of gemstones when set.

Favourite tool:

The saw frame. Its versatile and can also be your best file. A close second would be my plannishing hammer for forging.

Best part of job:

To create beautiful one off pieces of jewellery for clients to admire for years to come. It is always a treat to see the big smile on the face of the newly engaged couple when collecting their rings.

Worst part of job:

The sacrifices to family life and time to my craft and business commitments.

Best tip from a jeweller:

”Good work takes time, quality beats quantity”.

Best tip to a jeweller:

Keep learning the trade; the day you think you know it all is the day to give it away.

Love jewellery because:

Coming to work each day you create something different with top quality gemstones and materials.

My bench is always:

Reasonably tidy, because I am always busy and often sorting different jobs or enquiries as need be.
