JAA asks jewellers to donate gold

The JAA is calling on jewellers to support its CIBJO-backed ‘Gold for good’ fundraising initiative by donating unwanted gold at this year’s Sydney trade fair.
The corporate social responsibility scheme – whose strapline is ‘I give a damn, I give a gram’ – is the brainchild of JAA member Ronnie Bauer and is part of a wider UNICEF initiative. It urges jewellers to give at least one gram of scrap gold to help raise funds for impoverished people around the world that contribute to the jewellery production industry.

‘Gold for good’ will launch at this year’s International Jewellery Fair and run throughout September. The JAA is inviting jewellers to make donations at its stand or via the organisation’s Sydney office.

JAA chief executive Ian Hadassin said: “It is important for us as an industry body to take responsibility and give back to those people who may be impacted by the jewellery industry’s activities.

“Somewhere in the world at this very moment, in a mine or a quarry, a child is hard at work, probably labouring underground in stifling heat and darkness and carrying loads of stones too heavy for their backs. Despite ongoing efforts in many countries to eliminate the practice, ‘child-mines’ can still be found all over the world.”

For more information on how to get involved, jewellers can contact the JAA by emailing info@jaa.com.au or calling 02 9262 2862.
