Jewellery retailers warned about elaborate crime spree

Jewellery retailers in the US have been warned to remain vigilant amid a wave of sophisticated burglaries.

In a joint statement issued by the Jewelers Security Alliance (JSA) and Jewelers Mutual, retailers were warned of organised criminal groups targeting jewellery stores.

The statement suggests that the criminals gain access to stores through rooftops and adjacent buildings and use elaborate tools to access safes. It also suggests that the group undertakes extensive reconnaissance during business hours.

A report published by the JSA earlier this year suggested that criminals were targeting jewellery businesses in the US at an unprecedented rate. Vice president Scott Guginsky said getting on the ‘front foot’ was crucial.

“I haven’t seen this level of severity and frequency in these types of attacks in all of my 30 years involved with jewellery crimes,” he said.

“This is a critical moment for jewellers everywhere. By taking immediate action and following security best practices, you can significantly reduce your store’s exposure to this growing threat.”

The statement recommends that jewellery retailers test and validate alarm and camera systems and update and clarify their business policy regarding theft. It also encourages engagement with local law enforcement and shopping centre security.
