A couple from Florida discovered the diamond at the Arkansas state park earlier this month, naming the stone ‘The Dash Diamond’ after their family dog.
Scott and Jennifer Freitas were visiting the park as part of a road trip through Alabama and Mississippi, and as avid miners of colour gemstones, described visiting the state park as a bucket list item.
The Crater of Diamonds State Park is the only public diamond mine in the US and has a ‘finders keepers’ policy for visitors to search the area.
The 3.36-carat diamond is described as ‘crystal clear’ in the centre with off-white edges and is around the size of a blueberry. Park Superintendent Caleb Howell said it was a remarkable find.
“I was stunned when I saw the pictures of the diamond,” he said.
“The shape, clarity, colour, and size made it a beautifully natural gemstone. It was a great reminder of the awesomeness of Crater of Diamonds State Park.”
More than 330 diamonds have been registered at the state park so far this year.
Earlier this year, a Minnesota man discovered a 3.81-carat brown diamond, the largest find of 2025. Other notable discoveries include a two-carat diamond found by a father and son from Arizona, as well as a 7.46-carat brown diamond spotted by a French tourist in January 2024.
More than 75,000 diamonds have been unearthed at the park since 1906.
