Australian retail associations merger approved by regulator

The proposed amalgamation of the Australian Retailers Association and the National Retail Association has been approved by the Fair Work Commission.

The merger between the two retail industry representatives was announced in May 2024 and, with the Fair Work Commission's approval secured, is expected to be finalised in February. After the merger, the organisation will be known as the Australian Retail Council.

The merger followed a decisive ‘yes’ vote from members of both organisations, with 93 per cent in favour. In December 2024, Chris Rodwell was appointed as the organisation’s inaugural CEO.

“We will combine the collective strength, experience and advocacy of two respected industry bodies into a unified voice – one that represents every retailer, from family-owned independents to iconic brands,” Rodwell said.

“We want every Australian to respect and celebrate the contribution of retail to communities across our nation. And we want governments to back the retailers that back Australia.”

Recent research noted the increasing control overseas businesses hold over the online retail market in Australia, and Rodwell said that this will be a priority.

“Low-cost operators, such as Temu and Shein, are growing at a pace in this market. They’re taking a greater share of the wallet, but adhere to different governance principles and contribute little in the way of employment or taxes,” Rodwell said.

“We need to hold them to account, while also reducing the compliance burden faced by local retailers, especially smaller independent businesses.”

Rodwell said the organisation’s focuses include policy reform and innovation. This includes reducing cost and compliance pressures, addressing retail crime, and navigating AI and technology adoption among Australian businesses.
