Rare blue diamonds expected to dominate at auction

Two blue fancy colour diamonds will be up for grabs at the upcoming Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale, and each stone is expected to generate a remarkable return.

The sale’s main highlight is The Azure Blue, a 31.62-carat, internally flawless, fancy blue diamond with a pear shape and even colour.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has praised the stone as one of the most important fancy-blue diamonds and the largest of its kind to appear on the market in recent years. Claibourne Poindexter of Christie’s described The Azure Blue as a rare masterpiece.

“Fancy blue diamonds of this calibre are extraordinarily scarce, and diamonds that combine such depth of hue with a weight of 31.62 carats are virtually never seen on the market,” he said.

“As the largest fancy blue diamond ever to be offered at auction, it marks a significant moment for collectors and for the field of coloured diamonds. With its striking colour, exceptional size, and refined pear-shaped silhouette, Christie’s is honoured to present this exceptional gem to a new generation of connoisseurs this June.”

Another highlight is a ring set with a 5.04-carat fancy-vivid-blue diamond. The diamond is a marquise-modified brilliant-cut, VVS2-clarity, type IIb diamond, and is surrounded by two tapered baguette-cut diamonds.

Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale will be hosted in New York on 9 June.
