Glowing diamond tiara for jubilee

Asprey, the Queen’s Royal Jewellers and light-artist Chris Levine have teamed up to create a three dimensional portrait of the Queen.
The Queen’s official jeweller has helped to celebrate the monarch’s diamond jubilee by collaborating on a three-dimensional piece of artwork featuring 1,000 diamonds.

Asprey, who has been supplying the Royal Family with jewellery and silverware for 225 years, combined with renowned light artist Chris Levine to create “The Diamond Queen”, a portrait of the monarch which features a real tiara made with 1,000 diamonds. The piece is based on Levine’s 2004 Queen portrait “Equanimity” while the tiara itself is a recreation of the Queen’s diamond diadem, which she wore on her way to coronation in 1953.

The body of the tiara was made by laser cutting and engraving a single piece of platinum, which was then decorated with 1,000 diamonds and 25 freshwater pearls, with a natural fancy yellow diamond to be set into an 18ct yellow gold collet at the centre of the diadem.

The tiara is being displayed on a holographic portrait of the Queen, with Levine saying the combination of light as an artistic medium and diamonds was a natural one.

It will be auctioned throughout the month of June and is expected to sell for somewhere between £800,000 and £1.2 million.

The proceeds of the sale will be split between two of the Queen’s charities, the Woodland Trust and QEST. The portrait is currently on show to the public at Asprey’s flagship store in London.
