Brighter is better for hearing aid 'jewellery'

A new German-designed hearing aid takes the shape of a large gauge earring, and is part of a new wave of hearing aids that value fashion as well as function.
The new ‘deafinite style’ design, which was created by Designaffairs Studio, places a sound amplification device inside a large earring-style device, which would require an initial ear piercing and wearing several different sized rings to stretch the ear to accommodate it. The earring is wired to a small plug that sits inside the ear permanently.

A release by the studio explains the motivation for the product, which is just one of many new stylish incarnations of the hearing aid: “Rising self-confidence is taking prostheses to another level. People don’t try to hide their handicap anymore. Show what you‘ve got, don’t make a fuss about your problem. Wear your hearing aid like a piece of jewellery, a stylish accessory. Be individual, be cool, be yourself.”

The ‘deafinite style’ hearing aid is also available in several colours and textures.

Devices to assist with deafness have been developed over centuries and have continually become slimmer and less noticeable. However, there is an increasing demand for hearing aid adornments and jewellery styled devices to help make a disability that is often concealed become something worth celebrating.

New Zealand National Foundation for the Deaf’s Louise Carroll told stuff.co.nz she accessorises her own hearing aid with beads and that she would like to see fashionable hearing aid design become more common.

"It would be great to have designers from Fashion Week taking the opportunity to get people to realise that it's OK to wear hearing aids," she said. "By personalising our hearing aids with adornment we show the world we are willing and able to communicate.”

The children’s market for hearing aid jewellery is perhaps more developed than the adult market. Two years ago, enterprising young hearing-impaired American girl Hayleigh Scott began designing and selling hearing aid charms for children online.

Hayleigh’s Cherished Charms now sells dozens of colourful charms that affix to children’s earring aids using many materials including Swarovski elements. There are now several online retailers designing and selling hearing aid adornments for children.
