The Great Gatsby-inspired jewellery

The Great Gatsby is a renowned story celebrating an era of jazz music, flapper culture, decadent parties and last, but definitely not least, a treasure box of resplendent jewellery pieces.
Australian director Baz Luhrmann’s movie remake of the classic tale premieres in cinemas on 30 May – and with a cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, it’s generating a lot of hype.

Feeling inspired by all the buzz surrounding the movie, Jeweller has explored the exquisite and distinctive style cultivated in the “Roaring ‘20s”.

The 1920s were a time to embrace modernisation and transformation. Following WWI, people were seeking a fresh start with renewed attitude.

The art deco style began to develop in the 1920s and continued through 1930s. It was the birth of a fashion that would prosper and continue to influence the world decades later.

It is often reported that the art deco movement originated in Paris in 1925 at an art exhibition, which launched the beginning of a new style integrating individuality, contemporary design and extraordinary workmanship.

It adopted curved pieces, angular lines, bold colours and geometric shapes. Long earrings and necklaces, cocktail rings, intricate filigree, tassels and pearls were all strong characteristics of this new-found fashion genre.

Jewellery pieces featured precious stones, plastics, silver, gold and new metals such as platinum. Society craved to express its freedom and individuality; hence the art deco style embraced drama, brilliance and wildness. The geometric shapes featured were inspired by futurism and cubism and, due to the discovery of King Tut’s tomb in 1923, Egyptian motifs were a major influence on the craze.

The classic pieces of the yet untamed style of art deco are today exhibited – and replicated – by major fashion houses including Tiffany & Co, Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier.

See below for Jeweller’s compilation of exquisite jewellery inspired by The Great Gatsby and the Roaring ‘20s. It might just bring out a little bit of Daisy Buchanan in all of us.
