Burka-clad thieves in jewellery smash-and-grab

An armed gang of thieves dressed in burkas has allegedly made off with luxury watches valued at £1 million (A$1.7m) from a busy London-based upmarket department store.
According to multiple media and police reports, video footage from Selfridges shows six axe and sledge hammer-wielding robbers waiting for a pre-arranged moment to smash glass cabinets and escape with a number of watches.

The daring smash-and-grab raid took place on Thursday 6 June just before 8:30pm in front of several stunned witnesses – the store is located on Oxford Street, one of the city’s busiest shopping districts.

The Daily Mail reported that once the gang had taken the watches, the thieves then met accomplices outside the building in getaway vehicles. Two suspects were arrested after falling off a motorcycle when it crashed nearby. Members of the public stopped them from leaving.

Police have reportedly charged a 19-year-old man with offences in relation to the brazen theft, and another suspect remains in hospital with leg injuries.

According to the Daily Mail, authorities have recovered one bag at the scene containing 41 watches.

Detective chief inspector Andy Noyes said: ”This was a brazen attack that was clearly well planned and well thought through.”

“I'd like to thank those members of the public who stepped in and detained our two suspects. Their quick thinking and brave actions have helped our investigation.”

Detective chief inspector Noyes added that while the robbers were wearing burkas, it wasn’t an indication that they were from the Islamic faith.

A spokesperson for Selfridges said it was not yet known exactly what had been stolen. The store opened for business the following day.

Reports stated that authorities were currently studying CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses.
