Jeweller caught trading $2 million of stolen goods

A citizen’s detective work has led to the investigation of a jewellery store suspected of stocking and selling stolen goods valued at approximately $2 million.
About 2,000 items have been seized from the Brisbane-based retailer, with Queensland Police believing the jewellery was stolen during burglaries dating as far back as 2010 and as recently as 2014.

The pieces were said to be mostly gold jewellery and included bracelets, earrings, pendants, rings and chains, as well as diamonds. Some of the items were estimated to be valued between $25,000 and $45,000.

According to multiple media reports, the investigation began after a woman conducted her own search to locate 25 pieces of jewellery that had been stolen from her house.

Her personal investigation led to the Inala jewellery store – the name of which has not been disclosed – and she promptly informed police.

The woman’s “detective work” was also said to have helped reunite another woman with her engagement ring and two other pieces of gold jewellery that held sentimental value.

A large amount of jewellery, however, remained unidentified; police have posted photos of the items online to assist in the return to owners.

The store has ceased trading and its owner has reportedly been arrested and charged. According to police, 90 per cent of the goods in the store were second-hand or stolen.
