Huge diamond discovery made in Russia

Another large rough diamond – this time weighing 76 carats – has been discovered by one of the industry’s major diamond producers.

Russian diamond mining company Alrosa unearthed the large stone at its Yubileynaya kimberlite pipe, located in the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic of Russia.

The diamond was described as octahedral in shape with a yellowish tone, small inclusions of olivine in its periphery and with a crack containing graphite and sulphide.

Alrosa claims to account for more than 25 per cent of global diamond production in terms of carats and 95 per cent of Russia’s overall diamond output.

While no official announcement was made regarding plans to sell the stone, the mining company stated it was estimated to be worth more than US$430,000 (AU$542,760).

In December last year, another diamond mined from an Alrosa site in Yakutia sold for US$1.81 million (AU$2.3 m) at a New York Sotheby’s auction. The round, brilliant cut 47.78-carat diamond – which originated from a 128.44-carat rough – had a starting price of US$900,000 (AU$1.1 million).

Other large rough diamond discoveries have also occurred in the past 12 months, including a 232-carat white diamond and a 122-carat blue diamond, both of which were sourced by Petra Diamonds at its Cullinan mine in South Africa.
