Local jeweller selected to exhibit in Rome

A jewellery designer originally from Queensland has been invited to unveil his latest collection at a Rome gallery.

Andy Lowrie will showcase his work at the myday-byday gallery as part of the ‘7 Artists, 7 Days’ exhibition between 5 – 16 June.

“I am particularly interested in working with materials that allow me to make surfaces marks very directly with my own hands and hand tools.”

The gallery is described as a space that “promotes and sells contemporary jewellery” and allows the world’s “best young talent” to showcase their work.

Lowrie told Jeweller it would be the first time his work would be displayed in Europe, having previously been showcased in Australia, China and North America, where he now resides.

“The ‘7 Artists, 7 Days’ exhibition brings together seven emerging artists nominated by institutions and organisations in seven different countries. The aim is to show diversity, skill and new thinking in early career practitioners,” Lowrie said.

“I was nominated by the head of the Jewellery and Small Objects department at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. This is the third edition of the event which has been held once a year since 2016.”

Collection inspiration

Lowrie explained his latest collection – which comprises of brooches, neckpieces and earrings – came about by using materials that allowed him to “make surface marks with his own hands”.

“I have been using a combination of traditional and non-traditional jewellery materials since 2015,” Lowrie said. “To achieve this, I started using industrial paints on copper and silver and made brooches and neckpieces with a scratched and scarred finish.

“I have since added steel, vitreous enamel, wood and graphite into the mix and devote a good portion of my time to experimenting before I make new work.”

Following the Rome exhibition, Lowrie’s work will be showcased at a gallery in Brazil later this year.
