Hong Kong trade show defies doubts

The Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair has attracted a significant number of serious buyers, despite local political protests and the global economic downturn.

Exhibitors reported being “pleasantly surprised” by the solid numbers, and business was proceeding as usual. While foot traffic was slower, exhibitors reported that the show attracted more serious buyers.

The fair follows a twin-show, two-venue format; the first half is focused on diamonds, coloured gemstones and pearls, is held at the Asia-World Expo in the Chek Lap Kok area. The second half of the show features finished jewellery, packaging, tools and equipment, and industry-related technologies. It takes place at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

"The positive feedback that we have received from buyers and exhibitors proves just how important the September Fair is to the jewellery trade”

“We are happy… We met serious international buyers from Europe and America, and from Asia – some new ones but mostly people we know. Due to current economic conditions, people have a smaller list of requirements but they are still buying,” Kaimesh Sukhadia of Thailand’s Sukhadia Stones Co said.

“Smaller good-quality rubies and sapphires are moving well. It has definitely been a good start to the show. There is a positive vibe when it comes to business. Serious buyers recognise the importance of the September Fair. They realise it is a good opportunity to buy and a strong platform for business.”

Hung Ming Li, from Chii Lih Coral Co in Taiwan, added, “The global economy will always have its ups and downs; this is perfectly normal. We are always upbeat about a better future. Our company has been exhibiting at the September Fair for many years and we will continue to support this important event.”

Organisers Informa Markets had previously reassured attendees that security procedures had been updated, amid concerns over the continued unrest in the city. It also offered buyer incentives including 10,000 complementary hotel rooms.

Celine Lau, director of jewellery fairs at Informa Markets, said, “The positive feedback that we have received from buyers and exhibitors proves just how important the September Fair is to the jewellery trade. We deeply appreciate the confidence and trust that our industry partners and customers have placed in us, and we look forward to delivering an even more outstanding sourcing experience to the global jewellery community in the years to come."
