Liberal India bent on gay jewellery

Progressive India is out in force in Kolkata, where a local jewellery brand has launched a collection for the gay and lesbian community.
Just a year after gay sex was decriminalised in India, the range has been launched to coincide with the anniversary of the Delhi High Court’s landmark judgment.
“The jewellery has rainbow-coloured flags enamelled on them. We also have a pendant designed in the shape of Greek alphabet Lambda, a symbol of gay rights,” said Brinda Sirkar of Gold Factory, the store behind the line, speaking to The Hindustantimes.
The jewellery line comprises a range of silver pieces costing between INR500 and INR1,850 ($12 and $45). Sirkar said he gets seven to eight inquiries about the jewellery each day.?
The Hindustantimes described the ‘pink rupee’ – a term used to describe the purchasing power of the new-found gay community in India – as a “hot new business trend”.
Jeweller is unaware of any similar precious metal collections on the Australian market.
