The necklace consists of 52 round brilliant cut diamonds, some as small as 1.07-carats and others as big as 7.14-carats. The pre-sale estimate minimum was $US4.8 million ($AU7.18 million).

51 pieces were featured in the auction, including a collection which belonged to Hong Kong actress Rosamund Kwan. That collection included jewellery from Cartier, Buccellati, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Louis Vuitton.

86 per cent of the items were successfully sold with participants attending from 21 countries.

Loose diamond proves popular

Phillips also hosted an auction in Hong Kong this week, selling 87 per cent of the available lot for sales totalling $US7.7 million.

The headline piece was a round brilliant 26-carat D-flawless loose diamond which fetched $US2.5 million ($AU3.74 million).

Benoît Repellin, worldwide head of jewellery at Phillips, said “the results prove that the market for colourless and coloured diamonds continues to be robust.”

Another item of note was a ring featuring a cushion-modified brilliant, 2.04-carat, fancy-intense-pink, VS1-clarity diamond which returned $US914,816 ($AU1.36 million) comfortably exceeding the pre-sale estimate of $US150,000 ($AU224,000).
