The Bulgari Pink: Spectacular diamond heads to auction

At an upcoming auction in Geneva, a massive fancy colour pink diamond will take centre stage with a hefty pre-sale estimate.

At the upcoming Autumn Luxury Week hosted by Christie’s, one of the headline features will be the Bulgari Pink, a 24-carat pink diamond ring with a pre-sale estimate of CHF15 million ($AUD25.87 million). The auction is scheduled for 10 November.

The emerald-cut, fancy intense pink type IIa diamond was set in a ring by Bulgari in the 1950s.

“According to family lore, the rough diamond was acquired in India during the 1950s by the current owner's great-grandfather and was later entrusted to Bulgari, where it was transformed into the elegant pink diamond ring seen today,” a statement explained.

“At the time, Bulgari, the Roman jeweller, was emerging as a destination for some of the world's most discerning collectors and patrons, making it a natural choice for a diamond of such rarity.

“The 1950s coincided with Rome's emergence as the centre of post-war glamour. With major Hollywood productions filming at Cinecittà Studios, international stars gathered in the city, creating what became known as ‘Hollywood on the Tiber’.

“Bulgari's boutique at Via Condotti became a social and cultural meeting point, welcoming many of the world's most renowned celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer, to name two Hollywood couples.”

Christie’s will showcase the Bulgari Pink in Geneva from 5-10 November in the lead-up to the auction.

• Another fancy colour stone is also expected to command tremendous interest at an upcoming auction – a 14.63-carat David Morris pink diamond.

Set in a ring, the emerald-cut orangey-pink stone sits between triangular-shaped white diamonds and is expected to return CHF2.1 million ($AUD3.62 million).

Taking place in Geneva on 10 November, the auction comprises 123 lots from a distinguished single-owner collection, according to Christie’s. The second part of the auction will occur online from 5-17 November and will include an additional 152 items from the same owner.
