Diamond jewellery sales spike for independent retailers

The latest analysis of sales at independent jewellery stores in Australia revealed a slight decrease during April.

Retail Edge Consultants reported a decline of 0.3 per cent during April on a year-on-year comparison and 3 per cent compared with 2023.

This follows a 4.4 per cent decrease in revenue in March, after consecutive increases in February and January.

The average retail sale (inventory only) increased by 12 per cent to $284, while unit sales decreased by 10 per cent on a year-on-year comparison. General manager Leon van Megen said the data provides valuable insight into consumer spending patterns.

“While this marks the third consecutive April of contraction, the pace of decline has slowed for the second year running, indicating a potential stabilisation in trading conditions,” he explained.

“That’s a total drop of 8,000 units over two years, reflecting a shift in consumer behaviour as shoppers opt for fewer, more deliberate purchases. This consistent growth in average sale value continues to offset the contraction in unit volume, helping preserve revenue outcomes despite reduced traffic.”

He added: “The rebound from last year’s dip suggests renewed interest in big-ticket items, though the two-year lag indicates the market may still be stabilising after post-COVID spending highs.”

Regarding specific categories, diamond jewellery increased by 25 per cent on a year-on-year comparison; however, it was 11 per cent lower on a two-year comparison.

Colour gemstone jewellery improved by 14 per cent compared with 2024, and Van Megen said that indicated a stable and loyal consumer support.

Sales of precious metal jewellery without a diamond or gemstone increased by 2.5 per cent on a one-year comparison, while silver and alternative metals decreased by 17 per cent.

The pattern in laybys was positive, while declines were noted in services, such as repairs, and special orders, when comparing new orders with pickups or cancellations.
