The diamond producer described the 41.82 carat stone as being of ‘exceptional quality’. The most recent blue diamond of this calibre was discovered in April 2021 and was eventually sold for $USD40.2 million ($AUD60.08 million).
According to a statement from Petra Diamonds, the company is in the process of evaluating the stone and determining the best method of sale.
“Early images and information from Petra suggest it is of exceptional colour and clarity, placing this stone squarely among the most important blue diamond discoveries of all time," writes Grant Mobley of the Natural Diamond Council.
“Blue diamonds already occupy the rarest tier of natural gemstones. A blue diamond of this size, recovered from one of the world’s most storied mines, immediately invites comparison to some of the most valuable diamonds ever sold.”
Discovered in 1902, the Cullinan Mine is renowned as a source of high-value diamonds, including the legendary Cullinan Diamond (3,106 carats). According to Petra Diamonds, the site is expected to continue producing diamonds until the 2040s.
Other notable discoveries at the Cullinan Mine include the Blue Moon of Josephine (12-carats) and the De Beers Blue (15-carats). Petra Diamonds purchased the Cullinan Mine from the De Beers Group in 2007.
