The Ethereal Jadeite Necklace appeared at Christie’s in Hong Kong. It features 61 jadeite cabochon beads and yellow fancy colour diamonds on the clasp. The gemstones were described as having a vivid green colour with glassy translucency.
In the lead-up to the Magnificent Jewels sale on 26 May, a wide-ranging pre-sale estimate was set for the necklace; however, it exceeded that range and returned HKD200 million ($AUD35.6 million).
“Jadeite arrived in China from Burma in the late 18th century. By the early 19th century, it had become one of the Qing court’s most fashionable stones, its popularity often linked to Empress Dowager Cixi’s celebrated fondness for jadeite,” a report from The Value explains.
“Officials and noblemen collected it avidly, both to wear and to present as gifts, helping to drive its value sharply higher.
“Today, fine jadeite remains one of the most coveted gemstones in Asia. The finest examples are prized for their vivid colour, translucency, and so-called ‘water content’ – the luminous, almost liquid glow that gives jadeite much of its appeal.”
Pieces from designers such as Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co., and Cartier also found buyers at the Magnificent Jewels sale.
