The heist occurred on 19 October, 2025, with more than $140 million in jewellery stolen. It caused a security crisis at the museum and resulted in the resignation of director Laurence des Cars.
French director Romain Gavras will reportedly lead the project, according to Le Film Francais.
His previous work includes the 2025 film Sacrifice, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, and music videos for GENER8ION, as well as Jay-Z and Kanye West's ‘No Church in the Wild’.
The film is based on the investigative book 'Main basse sur le Louvre', written by journalists from Le Parisien, Le Monde, and Paris Match. Publisher Flammarion confirmed the sale of the book's film rights to production company Iconoclast. The film's title and cast have yet to be announced.
After seven months of investigation and the arrests of several suspects, the jewellery remains missing.
The heist occurred 250 metres from the Mona Lisa, one of the Louvre’s most iconic exhibits. Of the nine historical jewels targeted, eight were stolen. The collection includes items once owned by Emperor Napoleon, his nephew Napoleon III, and Empresses Marie-Louise and Eugénie.
The authors described the missing royal adornments as a mystery that has confused investigators and highlighted the rise of art theft among criminal groups.
