Russia's new guidelines will take effect on 1 September and require that lab-created diamonds in jewellery be labelled as ‘synthetic’, with their weight stated in grams rather than carats. The term diamond is reserved for jewellery containing natural diamonds.
The government also prohibits the use of quality and colour terms commonly associated with natural diamonds when describing lab-created stones. Terms such as precious, real, genuine, natural, mineral, eco-friendly and similar expressions may not be used to describe synthetic jewellery.
"The main goal of the new rules is to improve transparency in the jewellery display and protect consumers," said Alexey Moiseev, deputy minister of finance of the Russian Federation.
"These approved changes aim to make relationships between jewellery sellers and consumers more honest and transparent".
In recent weeks, the African Diamond Producers Association (ADPA) agreed to limit how lab-created diamonds can be described. India's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and regulators in France have also introduced similar restrictions.
