The discovery was made during excavations by a team from the Supreme Council of Antiquities at a cemetery linked to one of ancient Egypt's primary religious centres.
The objects were found beneath a mudbrick tomb containing human remains. Further excavation uncovered a carefully arranged cache of adornments, ritual items, and personal objects associated with funerary customs.
The finds included a copper mirror and two alabaster cosmetic vessels with intact lids, each containing traces of kohl preserved for centuries. Researchers also recovered a third kohl container carved from black obsidian, a material rarely found in such burials.
The cache included two light-blue faience vessels, one of which contained six symbolic scarabs with incised markings. Two of these were set in yellow metal, likely gold. Faience amulets associated with ancient Egyptian beliefs were also present.
Nearby, four decorative stones were recovered, including two agates. One pinkish-red stone was set in a yellow metal frame believed to be gold, while another had a greenish, lapis-like appearance.
Jewellery was also found, including five pairs of earrings measuring 1.5 to 2.5 centimetres in diameter, likely made of gold. Earlier excavations at the site uncovered burial structures, coffins and artefacts from several periods, indicating continuous use of the cemetery from the Late Period through the Roman and early Christian eras. Ongoing work is expected to reveal more about those buried there and the site's use.
