Millions stolen from BaselWorld diamond trader

Four diamonds worth millions of dollars were stolen from BaselWorld, the world’s biggest watch and jewellery fair, on March 30.
Reports say that the unidentified offenders distracted an employee of an Israeli diamond trader in exhibition hall 3.0 and stole diamonds from his display window.

The Israeli trader only realised his diamonds were missing 15 minutes after the theft and although the exhibition hall was closed for half an hour to prevent the thieves from escaping, no captures were reported.

Markus Nelzl, spokesperson for Basel’s prosecutor office, told AFP that the theft involved “probably four to five accomplices”.

Police are examining CCTV footage and looking into DNA traces and fingerprints, according to reports.

BaselWorld also suffered robberies in 2007, when thieves made away with more than CHF1 million ($1.04 million) worth of jewellery, and in 2009 when a perpetrator stole CHF13 million ($13.55 million) worth of jewellery.
