2012 Bathurst 1000 Winning Drivers Rings
2012 Bathurst 1000 Winning Drivers Rings

Quirky ring for race winner

Championship rings are synonymous with US sporting codes and now, for the first time, the winner of next week’s Bathurst 1000 will be awarded the Bathurst Winning Drivers Ring.
Designed and created by V8 Supercars official championship jeweller Speed Jewellery to mark the 50th anniversary of the race, the Bathurst Winning Drivers Ring features both white and black diamonds set in white and yellow gold.

The shape of the Mount Panorama Circuit also features in the design and one ring has been made for each of the winnings drivers of the iconic endurance event.

While the concept of championship rings has been made famous by US sports like the NBA, NFL and NASCAR, this will be the first time Australia’s V8 Supercars winners will be awarded a winner’s a ring for the premier event.

Speed Jewellery head designer and managing director Colin Burn designed the ring, with CAD and technical support from Ben Calabrese and Craig Long of Facet RP.

Crafted in more than 30 grams of 14ct gold, the ring features a three dimensional Bathurst track in yellow gold atop a white gold base tension set in a heavy yellow gold band lined with black and white check diamonds.

A similarly designed ring in honour of Peter Brock, known in the sport as the “King of the Mountain”, has also been produced. It presents all nine of Brock’s Bathurst wins with a flush set of diamonds, his number five racing number, a red garnet symbolising his beloved Holden and his PB signature.

Only 100 of the Brock rings will be made and will be available for purchase by motor racing fans.

V8 Supercars CEO David Malone said the ring is a unique piece of jewellery that encapsulates 50 years of racing at Mount Panorama.

“The Bathurst Winning Drivers Ring is special,” Malone said. “It shows how the sport has transformed since the 1960s and it pays homage to the mountain. This ring will play an important role in celebrating the 50 years of racing at Mount Panorama.”
