Non-traditional engagement rings for alternative brides

Contrary to popular belief, diamonds aren't ‘every’ girl’s best friend – so it’s just as well there’s an endless array of unconventional engagement rings for the bride-to-be looking for something different.

While a traditional setting with a classic white diamond is a beautiful custom, many contemporary brides are searching for a unique edge to their engagement ring.

Finding the perfect piece that complements individual taste and personality can be a tricky feat and saying yes to the right ring is a huge decision. Worn for the rest of their lives, it’s only natural brides take some time to make their selection.

It’s widely acknowledged that De Beers started the ‘diamond ring’ tradition when it launched a marketing campaign in the 1930s. The advertisement suggested that a man should spend the equivalent of a three-month’s salary on an engagement ring.

But a lot has changed since then. In addition to varying budgets and an increasing amount of input from a woman regarding ring choice, a wide selection of alternative styles, gemstones and metals appear to be luring bride-to-bes.

Celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivia Wilde are among the A-listers that have parted with traditional styles.

When choosing an alternative design, creative and cool rings spring to mind; however, classic styles are also infinite. Jeweller has compiled a list below that should help to provide further insight into the latest trends.

The vintage ring

Perfect for old-school romantics, the vintage ring is a design that pays tribute to bygone days. Whether it’s an art-deco masterpiece or a family heirloom, this style is considered to be elegant and sophisticated.

The unique gemstone

Available in every hue under the sun, coloured gemstones can serve as a way to set one’s engagement ring apart. Growing in favour, coloured gemstones are eye-catching and bold. Popular choices include emerald, tourmaline and topaz.

The diamond with a twist

With alternative cuts, innovative designs and a host of colours, these diamond rings are anything but traditional. Bold pink, bright yellow and moody grey are just some of the coloured diamonds that shine bright on engagement rings.

The minimalist ring

We’ve all heard the term ‘less is more’ and for the modest bride-to-be a minimalist ring could be a perfect match. Simple and subtle, this design will never go out of style.

The bohemian ring

For the free-spirited bride, the bohemian style ring is a beautiful fit. These engagement rings often incorporate natural elements such as a rough diamond and flowing shapes.

The quirky ring

Perhaps the hardest to buy for, the ‘off-beat’ bride is sure to have a unique style. One-of-a-kind rings and colourful gemstones are an irresistible option.

The bling-hater

Most likely considered boring by traditional bridal standards, plain bands with creative metal work are a bling-hater’s delight. A beautiful touch is an engraved message.
