Great fanfare in London

Jewellers in the UK have celebrated London Jewellery Week, an event seeking to revolutionise the jewellery industry.
London Jewellery Week (LJW) wrapped on Sunday following seven days of jewellery exhibitions, catwalk shows, seminars and parties.

The week ended with the “Treasure” selling event, showcasing the work of up-and-coming designers alongside established brands.

Swarovski (pictured) was the most notable brand on display, while young designer Joanna Dahdah was presented with the New Designer award.

Top UK designer Stephen Webster attended the event and commented on upcoming jewellery trends.

He spoke of a “shift to silver” for up-market jewellery due to soaring gold prices. He also predicted an increase in demand for diamonds.

“London Jewellery Week should end up, we hope, like a London Fashion Week for the London jewellery industry,” David Marshall, a top London jewellery designer based in the Hatton Garden diamond jewellery district in London said at the event.

Mayor of Camden Jonathan Simpson attended the event, and spoke of the week’s growing popularity.

“Obviously, the aim is to make it on a par with London Fashion Week and I think events like this really just show that it’s on its way to be that way.”

Shaun Leane, who was the UK’s jewellery designer of the year in 2009, said, “London Jewellery Week highlights the creativity of London as a centre for jewellery.”

Dozens of events took place around the capital last week to highlight the creativity and skills of London jewellery designers, craftsmen and jewellers, raising their profiles in both the domestic and international markets.

Sarah Ho, who won the award for best young UK designer at the Italian Jewellery Awards 2009, said she was confident that London Jewellery Week would boost her presence in international markets.

“It’s very good for our profile. We’re still a very young brand,” Ho said.

Her brand, SHO fine jewellery, will be active throughout London Jewellery Week and will be featured later this week on the QVC television channel.
