Sydney Fair: Nomination rides the wave of personalised jewellery

At this year’s International Jewellery Fair, one exhibitor is anticipating strong demand for a popular European brand that specialises in personalised jewellery.

Nomination Italy, founded by Paolo Gensini in 1983, has been distributed in Australia and New Zealand by Timesupply since 2018.

The brand is best known for its composable interchangeable bracelet collection, and has ridden the wave of popularity around personalised jewellery like few others.

A recent report from Vogue highlighted personalisation as the most significant factor in jewellery purchasing among younger consumers; however, this is far from a new trend – it’s been a consistent theme for more than a decade.

Timesupply managing director Ken Abbott said that when the company first became distributor of Nomination, the brand’s fashion collections were already popular with consumers in Australia.

With that said, there was a plan to refocus on the composable bracelets and replicate the success this specific product had experienced in other markets, in particular, the United Kingdom. Nearly a decade later, Abbott said this strategy has been a huge success.

“Along with on-trend marketing campaigns and successfully utilising all social channels, a new generation of consumers has discovered the composable bracelet and loves the ability to choose decorated links to reflect on a personal story, milestone or interest,” he tells Jeweller.

“With more than 4,000 link designs and new links released regularly, the selection is almost endless, offering outstanding repeat business for retailers.

“The ability to build a bracelet that evolves over time, marking birthdays, travels, anniversaries, achievements, passions or just fun, offers fantastic and simple future gift ideas.”

Nomination was, in many regards, the talk of the town at last year’s International Jewellery Fair because of a special visitor - Nicoleta Benta from the brand’s headquarters in Italy.

Gifted with an unusual talent for communication – Benta speaks seven languages – it didn’t take her long to capture the attention of visitors.

“Our brand is always focused on developing in new markets, and it’s been great to find out that so many retailers are passionate about our jewellery,” she explained at the show.

“For the brand, it’s always important to maintain direct contact with our partners, and we’ve always stood by that strategy. You could have the best jewellery in the world; however, without the right people, you’ll never survive.”

Nomination's jewellery is handcrafted in Florence using a broad range of materials, including 18-carat yellow gold, 9-carat rose gold, sterling silver, enamel, and stainless steel.

At the upcoming fair, new additions to the Australia and New Zealand collection will be on display. Among the collection is a range of instantly recognisable local icons - flags, ferns, kangaroos, koalas and kiwis - available in 18-carat gold and sterling silver.

“They look fantastic layered with more than one bracelet, with every bracelet telling a story,” Abbott explained.

“The links can be added, removed, or rearranged easily, allowing the wearer to refresh the look with designs that suit all ages and occasions, with the added bonus of easy wearing, no catches or clasps, they simply stretch to fit over your hand.”

“It’s everything younger consumers are looking for in jewellery – pieces that tell a personal story – and we’re looking forward to showing off the new additions to this collection at the Sydney Fair.”

The International Jewellery Fair will take place at Sydney’s International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour, beginning on 23 August.
