Unique Russian diamonds reflect holiday spirit

Russian diamond producer Alrosa has showcased two recently unearthed diamonds that resemble Christmas ornaments in a timely and festive discovery.

Alrosa has showcased two rough diamonds discovered at the Severalmaz Mine, located in the Arkhangelsk region. The first is described as resembling a Christmas tree ornament and weighs more than 17 carats.

The second was described as looking like a ‘cute puppy’ and weighs 2.7 carats, although it could also be thought to look like an angel or a star. As part of the announcement, chief geologist Ilya Zezin said the region was renowned for producing uniquely shaped diamonds.

“The Arkhangelsk deposit is unique in that it consists of six kimberlite pipes containing over 250 million tonnes of diamond-bearing ore,” Zezin said.

“Our diamonds have interesting morphological features and stand out from other deposits with their more rounded shapes and greater number of facets. Severalmaz’s mining operations are distinguished by the discovery of diamonds of rare shapes and colours, which are of not only scientific interest but also aesthetic beauty.”

As noted in a report published by Rapaport News, Alrosa has a long history of showcasing diamonds that reflect important events and objects. In 2018, the company unveiled a soccer-shaped stone during the FIFA World Cup, which was hosted in Russia.

During the past year, the company also unveiled a 468-carat rough, which was said to be the largest in the country’s history. Alrosa also showcased the New Sun, a 100-carat fancy vivid yellow diamond said to be the largest of its kind in Russia.
