According to CIBJO, the group falsely claims affiliation with an organisation and asserts endorsement of various products and financial instruments. It operates the website cibjo-as.org and references Bruce Ikemezu, who also claims an association with it.
CIBJO stated Monday that it recently learned of these claims and has no association with 'cibjo-as.org' or Bruce Ikemezu.
"As a non-profit representative association, CIBJO does not trade in any commercial products, the secondhand gold market, nor financial instruments such as gold futures," it said.
"Any persons making claims in CIBJO’s name are not authorised to do so, and quite possibly could be committing a criminal act."
Previously, an Indian-Japanese group also falsely claimed to operate a gold trading business associated with CIBJO. CIBJO issued a warning about these scammers in January.
The trade group has filed formal complaints with law enforcement agencies in several countries and urges industry members to exercise caution with unusual business offers and to conduct due diligence before making financial decisions.
Members contacted by individuals claiming to represent CIBJO should verify their credentials directly.
