On 30 June, police conducting routine patrols in the city’s eastern suburbs discovered a 31-year-old man asleep in a car in Fyshwick. The engine of the white Fiat was running, and police performed a roadside drug test, which returned a positive result.
During a subsequent search, investigators discovered $11,000 in jewellery, bank cards believed to have been stolen from the employee of a jewellery store, clothing with security tags, and a small amount of what was believed to be methamphetamine in the vehicle.
One week earlier, on the morning of 23 June, the same individual is accused of entering a jewellery store in Woden and allegedly taking a display case filled with items worth approximately $20,000.
The day before his arrest (29 June), the man entered a second jewellery store in the same suburb and allegedly took an employee’s handbag. Both incidents were reported to the police.
Following an appearance in the ACT Magistrates Court, the 31-year-old was kept in custody on charges of theft, illegal possession of stolen property, possession of suspected crime earnings, driving under the influence, and driving without a license.
