Retailers and suppliers alike expressed optimism about the road to the all-important holiday season on the opening day of the International Jewellery Fair in Sydney.
Retailers and suppliers alike expressed optimism about the road to the all-important holiday season on the opening day of the International Jewellery Fair in Sydney.

IJF26: Sentiment high during opening day as competition heats up

The opening day of the International Jewellery Fair is in the books, with proceedings at Sydney’s Darling Harbour venue getting off to an upbeat start.

An expansive range of new products and services from Australian jewellery industry suppliers was showcased throughout the hall, while retailers and suppliers alike expressed optimism about the road towards the all-important holiday season.

The Mystery Box Bench Challenge also made a triumphant return, drawing crowds throughout the day.

At the centre of the venue, a series of presentations covered a broad range of topics relevant to jewellery retailers, from maximising sales and protecting the business to the importance of emerging technology and digital tools, as well as the increasing significance of opal in the broader jewellery trade.

The Mystery Box Bench Challenge also made a triumphant return, drawing crowds throughout the day. Emerging jewellers worked intently under pressure, creating intricate pieces in full view of an audience as the clock counted down.

With cash prizes up for grabs and a red countdown clock ticking away, the competition gave emerging jewellers a valuable opportunity to demonstrate their skill and composure under pressure – and it continues tomorrow.

Happy anniversary!

Several industry suppliers have incorporated anniversary celebrations into their presence at this year’s fair. Among them is BECKS, which is celebrating 50 years of trading with the launch of its Jubilee Collection, featuring two new retail ranges.

The collection also includes three one-off commemorative pieces created specifically to mark the milestone. CEO Gavin Baird said each piece tells its own story through precious materials, Australian gemstones, and considered design.

“Fifty years is an incredible milestone; we wanted to mark it in a way that reflected who we are as a company and what we've built together,” he told Jeweller.

“Our Jubilee range was a great way to do just that. We’re proud to be launching the collection at this year’s Sydney Fair.”

Also celebrating an anniversary this year is Designa Accessories, the local distributor for brands including Guess, Timex, Rosefield, Maxum and Aston Martin. The company is marking 40 years in business with the launch of Timex’s Atelier collection – alongside, if the rumours are to be believed, a mysterious new brand distribution partnership.

The buying group also announced the winner of this year’s Apprentice of the Year award – and this time around the competition was fierce.

The Atelier collection offers a refined expression of modern luxury through considered details, balanced proportions, and premium materials. General Manager Ivan Meys said the team was enjoying showing new releases to visitors.

“It’s always good fun to celebrate an anniversary and, with some new faces, tell our story for the first time,” he said.

“This year is all about ‘40 Years of Time Well Kept’ for us, and we’re keeping our focus on what our customers want, which is pretty simple – bringing excellent products to market at great value prices and making sure that we've got compelling marketing campaigns that are going to help drive conversion.

“It’s always great to spend time with our long-term partners, meet a few new faces, and check in with other suppliers too.”

There was a third anniversary celebration to be found on the show floor at Centrestone Jewellery Insurance, which recently passed the 10-year milestone. Managing director Lachlan Renshaw said much of this year’s fair would focus on Centrestone Jewellers Block, a significant milestone for the company launched in September last year.

Nationwide looks ahead

As is so often the case, it was an action-packed day for the team at Nationwide Jewellers, Australia’s largest jewellery industry buying group.

The day began with Nationwide’s traditional ‘pre-game’ address to members, followed by confirmation of the next two destinations for the buying group’s overseas voyages.

Across August and September next year, members will embark on a voyage spanning two continents, first travelling to Botswana to see the source of a significant portion of the world’s diamond supply first-hand before heading to Antwerp to see how rough diamonds are transformed into jewellery’s most culturally significant stone.

Nationwide has also confirmed that, in May 2028, the group will host members on a tour of Turkey and Greece.

The buying group also announced the winner of this year’s Apprentice of the Year award – and this time around the competition was fierce.

Open to first- through fourth-year jewellery apprentices, this year’s competition challenged entrants to create a piece of jewellery expressing the theme ‘Love has many facets’.

The winner was Sandy Nguyen from Acacia Jewellers in New South Wales, who took home the Nathan Cameron Perpetual Trophy, a $5,000 prize to spend on tools to further her career, and a $500 voucher for Bolton Gems.

The Promising Talent Award went to Reuben Kelly from Kings Hall Jewellers in New South Wales.

• The excitement at the International Jewellery Fair continues tomorrow. Before then, however, the industry will gather for the return of the Big Night Out.

This year’s event will be hosted at L’Aqua on Cockle Bay Harbour on Saturday (22 August), giving independent retailers, suppliers, and other trade members an opportunity to network and unwind in a relaxed setting.
