Bangkok gem expert to tour Australia

International gem expert Ted Themelis is to present a series of workshops in Australia’s major cities, in partnership with the Gemmological Association of Australia (GAA).
Themelis, who is based in Bangkok, has more than 30 years’ experience in the treatment of rubies and sapphires.
The GAA said: “Treatments are changing and evolving quickly. It is vital to keep up to date with the type of treatments that exist in the market. If one is selling to the public or to the trade you are legally compelled to disclose any treatments.
“To the uneducated eye, the $5 treated ruby could be indistinguishable from the $5000 Ruby at point of sale. However, the $5 ruby may degrade on exposure to common household cleaners. Simply put, the trade need to know what they are buying, selling or valuing as they are accountable."
The workshops will offer a mix of theory and practical components, such as handling gemstones, and aim to provide attendees with the most up to date information in the field.
Themelis has worked extensively on the development, engineering and manufacturing of innovative gemmological testing instruments and apparatuses. He has also been involved in various experimental gemstone enhancement projects, focusing on the heat treatment of rubies and sapphires.
The workshops will be offered as either a full day or two evening classes and attendees will receive samples of treated gems. The tour will start on August 11 in Perth, followed by sessions in Brisbane, Sydney and then Melbourne.
