Auction action: Impressive return for a remarkable pink diamond

The fourth-largest fancy intense pink diamond to appear at auction has generated a hefty return at Phillips’ Geneva Jewels auction.

The 20.19-carat VVS1 diamond is accented with baguette diamonds and entered the auction with a high pre-sale estimate of $US16.5 million ($AU26.24 million).

The diamond was sold for $US13.2 million ($AU20.51 million) as the headline act of the auction.

The auction took place on 6 November, and other highlights included a ring featuring a 54.27-carat fancy intense yellow diamond. That item returned $US1.5 million (AU2.33 million).

In July, the auction house confirmed plans to host annual jewellery auctions in Geneva.

Earlier this year, the 10.57-carat Eternal Pink returned $US34.8 million ($AU55.31 million) at an auction at Sotheby’s in New York.

What’s the time?

Two timepieces created by one of the UK’s most well-regarded watchmakers returned $US3.2 million ($AU4.97 million) at Sotheby’s Important Watches auction in Geneva.

The top item in the sale was the last reference from the Millennium series by George Daniels and Roger Smith, completed in 2001. It is the only watch in the series both watchmakers signed.

The watch returned $US2.4 million ($AU3.73 million), with nine people competing for the watch over five minutes of bidding.

The second high-profile item was a George Daniels anniversary watch, the first in a series of 35 watches to celebrate the anniversary of the watchmaker’s invention of the coaxial escapement mechanism.

This timepiece returned $US819,357 ($AU1.2 million), comfortably exceeding its high estimate.
