Investigators have arrested suspects in the San Fernando Valley just weeks after a crew of thieves breached a Simi Valley jewellery store by tunnelling through walls, stealing $USD3.5 million in valuables.
Detectives described the crew as a South American group known for sophisticated, high-value burglaries in California. The suspects were connected to the crime using surveillance footage, forensic evidence and license plate readers.
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced charges of conspiracy to commit burglary and receive stolen property for each defendant, along with special allegations for losses exceeding $USD3 million and group criminal activity. Each suspect pleaded not guilty at an arraignment.
A search in Los Angeles County uncovered more than $USD600,000 in stolen jewellery, watches, and cash. Police also recovered commercial burglary tools and a stolen firearm.
Authorities believe planning began more than a week before the crime and said that the investigation is ongoing, with the potential for more arrests to follow.
