According to the latest Crime Statistics Agency data, jewellery remains the second-highest priority target for thieves in Victoria, led only by cash.
The data, collected between March 2024 and 2025, revealed that nearly $29 million in jewellery was reported stolen from properties in Victoria. The hardest hit suburb was Boroondara in Melbourne’s northeast, with $3.3 million stolen.
Hawthorn, Balwyn North, and Kew have also reported significant jewellery thefts. A Victoria Police spokesperson told The Herald Sun that households should use simple home security measures to prevent burglaries.
“Since the start of the year, around 65 per cent of all aggravated home burglaries in key hotspots have either been due to unlocked doors/windows, or an unsuccessful attempt when the offender realised the home was locked,” the spokesperson said.
“Therefore, please lock all your doors and windows each night, as well as ensuring your car is locked and items such as garage remotes are out of sight.”
More than $55 million worth of jewellery was stolen from Victoria residential properties in 2017. This figure has declined each year since that high point.
