Jeweller hospitalised during Melbourne crime spree

A 59-year-old man was hospitalised after being struck on the head with a hammer during a daytime crime spree involving two Melbourne jewellery stores.

On 17 February, three offenders armed with hammers and bats entered a jewellery store in Berwick. Dressed in black hoods, masks, and high-visibility shirts, they broke glass display cabinets and stole jewellery while staff were present.

Speaking with local media, a witness described the incident as terrifying and said efforts to intervene were unsuccessful.

"I was sitting behind the counter and suddenly three people, they came in, and started to break all the windows," employee Basima Goga told 9News.

"They took some stuff, we tried to defend ourselves, but to be honest, it was very, very scary."

Johny Toros, owner of Official Berwick Jewellers, confronted the offenders and was assaulted. The group fled when he retrieved a wrench, escaping in a Toyota Kluger driven by a fourth individual. Toros received treatment at the scene for upper body injuries and was subsequently transported to the hospital in stable condition.

Police believe the same group drove to a jewellery store in Altona North, where they used the stolen Toyota to ram a roller door. Unable to gain entry, they fled without taking any items.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
