After a number of industry rumours began circulating about an Australian diamond business, Jeweller contacted the JAA which confirmed that it had become aware about a number of claims and consumer complaints being made against the business.
JAA chief executive Ian Hadassin said he had received a large number of complaints from consumers concerning two things; the late delivery of product and a lack of refund or the length of time taken to refund money for items that had been returned.
“It seemed to be out of proportion with the usual number of complaints we receive about any particular company. We received six to eight about this business in a four-week period. That’s a lot,” he explained.
At the time of publication, Hadassin was working with the company to alleviate any consumer or trade concerns. Jeweller understands that Hadassin met with a company representative on September 1 and was provided with a number of undertakings to rectify some of the claims.
However, Hadassin was adamant that if the company did not resolve the important issues, and deliver on its own undertakings, the matter would be referred to the consumer watchdog – the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
While Hadassin would not confirm or deny, it is most likely the company’s membership to the JAA will be discussed at the next board meeting.
