That’s according to the latest report from Retail Edge Consultants, which documented a 1.8 per cent decline in revenue in July on a year-on-year comparison. With that said, sales remained 8 per cent higher when compared with July 2024. The data is sourced from more than 400 independent jewellery stores in Australia and New Zealand.
Unit sales declined by 7 per cent on a year-on-year comparison and sat 20 per cent lower than in July 2024. The average retail sale (inventory only) reached $330, a 4.9 per cent increase compared with July 2025. General manager Leon van Megen said these figures continue to reinforce long-running trends in the jewellery industry.
“Softer performance across several major categories outweighed the continued benefit of higher average sale values. Despite this, the two-year comparison remains positive, reflecting the market's continued ability to generate higher revenue from fewer transactions,” van Megen explained.
“Unit volumes continued to decline, reinforcing the sustained trend of reduced transaction activity. Transaction frequency remains under pressure, with the importance of maintaining strong conversion and average sale outcomes within a lower-volume trading environment.”
He added: “Average sale continued to be the strongest contributor to overall trading performance. The sustained uplift confirms the market's ongoing transition towards higher-value purchasing, with transaction quality continuing to offset the impact of declining sales volumes.”
In terms of specific categories, diamond jewellery sales declined by 22 per cent on a year-on-year comparison. Elsewhere, colour gemstone jewellery increased by 22 per cent compared with July 2025.
“Coloured stone delivered one of the strongest performances, recovering from last year's decline. The result strengthens the category's longer-term position, demonstrating its ability to generate consistent growth despite broader fluctuations in trading conditions,” van Megen said.
Jewellery without a diamond or colour gemstone improved by 2.4 per cent on a one-year comparison and 26 per cent on a two-year comparison. Silver and alternative metals jewellery was another improver, rising by 14 per cent compared with July 2025.
These figures follow an 8 per cent increase in June and a 3 per cent decline in sales in May. Previously, a 5 per cent increase in sales was recorded in April, a 7 per cent jump in jewellery sales in March and February, and a 12 per cent rise in January.
