Jewellery crime falls overall; losses and violence rise

A fascinating new report into crimes targeting jewellery businesses has highlighted several disturbing trends.

The number of crimes targeting jewellery businesses declined in the US market in 2025; however, total financial losses increased. This is one of many key findings published by the Jewelers Security Alliance (JSA) in its Annual Crime Report.

There were 1,233 recorded crimes in 2025, a decline of 13 per cent compared to 2024. However, total losses rose by 1.5 per cent to $USD144.7 million ($AUD199 million).

Violent crimes against jewellery business employees increased 10 per cent, alongside smash-and-grab incidents. Robberies involving firearms increased by four per cent. On-premises burglaries declined from 305 to 262, though the total value stolen remained unchanged.

Jennifer Mulvihill, president of the JSA, told JCK Online that the annual report is an industry standard for analysing the impact of crime within the jewellery trade.

“JSA has remained steadfast in its approach to protecting the jewellery industry by disseminating our weekly crime alerts and using our real-time text alert platform,” she said.

“Loss professionals, law enforcement, and jewellery executives rely on this resource to protect lives, assets, and businesses.”

Many incidents were unsophisticated and involved minimal planning. The most severe cases involved South American theft groups using Wi-Fi jammers to disrupt surveillance and GPS tracking systems.

Off-premises crimes also declined from 47 to 39 during the same period. However, burglaries at jewellers’ homes increased from four to 11. California accounted for 24 per cent of all burglaries in 2025, followed by Texas, Connecticut, Florida, and New York.

JSA also found that January, June and July were the most active months for crime, and Friday was the most common day for robberies.
