Diamond encrusted soccer ball

A jeweller has unveiled a full size, diamond-encrusted soccer ball just in time for the World Cup.

South African jeweller Shimansky unveiled the ball last week to coincide with the opening of the FIFA World Cup.

The ball features an astonishing 6,620 white round brilliant-cut diamonds and 2,640 black diamonds, each weighing approximately 0.4 carats.

The diamonds have a total weight of 3,500 carats, while the entire ball weighs about 2.2 kilograms.

The jeweller values the ball at over $3 million.

“This ball is not designed for any goalkicking practice,” joked company director Yair Shimansky to South Africa’s Business Day.

Shimansky said he is currently in talks to sell the ball to a prominent European soccer club after the World Cup.

He will also produce seven replicas of the ball using black and white crystals, each valued at $1,200. They will then be auctioned off with the proceeds to go to charity.

In addition, Shimansky has designed a unisex World Cup dome ring featuring 9.4 carats of diamonds and valued at over $18,000.

So far the ball has taken three months to produce, and work is still ongoing as Shimansky sources more diamonds.

The FIFA world cup opened on June 11, and will run until the final on 11 July.
