Hat-trick: Sales boom for Australian jewellery retailers in July

The latest analysis of independent jewellery store sales in Australia has revealed a significant spike, leaving retailers with cause for optimism heading into the second half of the year.

The analysis, published by Retail Edge Consultants, revealed a 7 per cent increase in sales during July on a year-on-year comparison. This figure also marked an 8 per cent increase on a two-year comparison.

Unit sales decreased by 12 per cent on a year-on-year comparison. The average retail sale (inventory only) increased to $303, a remarkable 33 per cent rise from the previous July and a 24 per cent improvement from two years before.

This analysis marks the continuation of a trend in recent months, with jewellers reporting a 1.3 per cent increase in sales in June and a 3.9 per cent increase in May.

General manager Leon van Megen said signs of improving market stability continue to be identified.

“This marks the strongest July performance in three years, with revenue growth pointing to stabilising trading conditions despite continued pressure on volume,” he explained.

“Lower unit sales continue to reflect deliberate consumer behaviour — fewer transactions, with more value placed on each purchase.

“The steady lift in sale value is helping offset softened unit volumes and underscores the shift to quality over quantity.”

In terms of specific categories, diamond jewellery increased by 15 per cent on both a one-year and two-year comparison in July.

Van Megen added: “This is the strongest result for the category in three years, reflecting renewed consumer interest in premium jewellery.”

Colour gemstone jewellery sales decreased by 9 per cent on a year-on-year comparison but remained 10 per cent higher than in 2023. Jewellery without a diamond or gemstone improved by 11 per cent on a one-year comparison, while silver and alternative metals jewellery decreased by 6 per cent by the same comparison.

A minor improvement in laybys, between new orders and pickups or cancellations was recorded, while declines in services, such as repairs, and special orders were noted.
