Jewellery sales back on track in June

Jewellery sales across Australian independent retailers returned to positive territory over the past month.

That’s according to the latest analysis from Retail Edge Consultants, which found that jewellery sales in June increased by 8 per cent on a year-by-year comparison. The data is sourced from more than 400 independent jewellery stores in Australia and New Zealand.

Unit sales for June declined by 7 per cent on a year-on-year comparison and were 14 per cent lower than the same month in 2024. The report noted that this is a continuation of a persistent trend, with fewer transactions and higher-value purchases increasingly driving overall market performance.

The average retail sale (inventory only) increased to $355, rising by 23 per cent year-on-year and 34 per cent higher than the same period in 2024. Retail Edge Consultants general manager Leon van Megen said these figures confirm customers are consistently spending more per purchase despite fewer overall transactions.

"Higher-value transactions continued to support growth, with stronger average sale values more than offsetting lower transaction volumes," he explained.

"The result reinforces transaction quality as the primary driver of revenue performance in the current trading environment.

“Unit volumes continued to contract during the month, extending the longer-term trend of reduced transaction activity. Customers remain increasingly selective in their purchasing, reducing transaction frequency across the market. This places continued emphasis on conversion quality and average transaction value within a lower-volume trading environment.”

In terms of specific categories, diamond jewellery sales improved by 3.5 per cent on a year-on-year comparison; however, remained 9 per cent lower on a two-year comparison.

Colour gemstone jewellery sales increased by 16 per cent compared with June 2024, with the report noting that the category recovered strongly, restoring performance to its longer-term level and providing a dependable contribution amid lower transaction volumes.

Elsewhere, sales of silver and alternative metals jewellery declined by 4.5 per cent on a year-on-year basis. In contrast, sales of jewellery without a diamond or colour gemstone increased by 11 per cent.

"Silver and alternative metals softened against both comparison periods, making it one of the weaker-performing categories during the month," van Megen added.

"While accessible pricing remains a key strength, the decline suggests lower-value purchases are contributing less to overall growth as spending remains concentrated in higher-value transactions."

These figures follow a 3 per cent decline in sales in May. Previously, a 5 per cent increase in sales was noted in April, a 7 per cent rise in jewellery sales in March and February, and a 12 per cent improvement in January.
